GERHARDT RITTER WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP

GERHARDT RITTER WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP

April 10, 2021 | 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

Portrait workshop with Gerhard Ritter Saturday 10th April

An enthusiastic group of 15 attended this workshop which began with Gerhard giving us tips about

the materials and equipment he uses. He has some very innovative easels which he makes, and also

a nifty palette created using his 3D printer.
He first demonstrated painting an “animal portrait” using a photo of a pygmy possum, carefully

building up the layers, leaving the white paper for the light areas. A very loose application of paint for t

he background at the end, provided contrast so that the highlights stood out.
Our choice as the pygmy possum or an emu and most chose the possum.
The afternoon’s work was a “human” portrait, but to make things easier, we were allowed to trace

the outline of the face. This meant more time painting and less drawing up. For this exercise, we took

a ‘follow the leader’ approach, which meant Gerhard would paint the portrait in stages and we would follow his actions.
The afternoon concluded with another demo from Gerhard. Everyone produced good work

and those who don’t usually attempt portraiture were pleasantly surprised.
